  The name Greene

Greenes in Ireland and Australia

William Green, my great grandfather, (son of William) came from County Clare in Ireland to settle in Beaufort in Victoria, in the 1850s. Escaping the potato famine, and attracted by the gold rushes, he and his cousin Michael (son of Luke) raised their families in Victoria.
In Australia, they dropped the 'e' from the end of the name, Greene, used by their ancestral family in Ireland (both then and today).

My research efforts to date indicate a strong likelihood that my great grandfather was born in the townland of Ballycotton, in the parish of Kilmacrehy, in County Clare.
